The Douro has a special charm, its landscapes began to be sculpted millions of years ago, and for a long time now, man has contributed by drawing terraces on the hillsides, arranging the existing stones into walls and landings to create land capable of cultivating its unique vineyards, which in the harvest are translated into unique, authentic wines, full of their "terroir".
But the recognition of Douro wines has a lot of work behind it. For many years, the region has been perfecting its techniques, but there is one date to highlight
The Douro Region is the oldest demarcated region in the world, dating back to 1756.
While Portugal was still a monarchy, in 1756, during the reign of King José I, the world's first institutional model for the organization of a wine region was defined by the initiative of the famous minister of the kingdom "Marquês de Pombal", through a territorial delimitation, many of whose landmarks still remain today, used at the time for the demarcation of the "Alto Douro Vineyards".
